Animators have long used alpha channels or mattes to overlay animated sequences with background artwork.  I created a PNG sequence and through the timeline, flipped the sequence to produce an animation of an animated object over a background.  My question is whether or not there is a way to overlay MOV or AVI files instead.  MOV files carry an alpha channel but do not work in Blend.  AVI files which are compressed do not carry an alpha channel unless it is uncompressed.

I am a new user of Expression Blend, and I have been testing and reading for a few days now with no answer except using PNG sequences.

Has anyone succeeded in creating an overlay using a compressed media file?
