Do I need to have Windows Defender on my PC if I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed?

I cannot get Defender to open up I keep getting various error codes and I am unable to fix the problems. Error codes are: 0X800106ba, 0x800705b4 and 0x800106b5. The code that I am now getting when I try to open up Defender is the first one listed.

I tried to uninstall Defender but it is not listed under unistall programs listing.
