I have a number of construction companies who wish to utilise SharePoint as their document management solution, however there is one sticking point, all construction have the requirement for revision control however all files names differ, ie I may have a file called "Doc1" and the next revision would be called "Doc2". SharePoint sees this as a new file not a new revision of the previous file.

I would like to be able to select a file in the list view, click a button in the ribbon bar, extract "Doc1" file metadata, then be prompted to add/browse a new file and auto populate the "Doc2" metadata with the "Doc1" metadata. Then ideally change the status of "Doc1" to obsolete to hide the old revision.
