I created a custom 2013 list workflow in sharepoint designer that allows a group of approvers to approve a newly created wiki page or modified page. Once the approval has been given I would like the workflow to automatically publish the page.

I know this is possible with the default 2010 approval workflow that is used in the enterprise wiki but since I use a custom list workflow I would like to know how the same behaviour can be achieved.

To achieve your requirement, create SharePoint designer workflow with start approval process action, click Approval:
