The Azure App Service options to purchase your domain, actually registers the domain with GoDaddy. So your domain is still registered but you can't access the managed as this is done through the portal (and you haven't got any other credentials) and as you mentioned, that subscription expired.

I've had the same happen (deleted custom domains / app services when domains were purchased through app services) but after 3 months the domain name was released again, though I haven't come across any documentation on this, so I'm not sure if this is expected behavior :)
